Controversial lab director joins Primate Products

What do you do when you are forced out of a major research university following scandal? Take a job at Primate Products, of course!

Thomas J. “Jeff” Rowell has joined the group of degenerates at Primate Products. Until August 2012, he was director of the New Iberia Research Center. The New Iberia Research Center, part of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, is infamous as the world’s largest chimpanzee lab with approximately 350 chimpanzees. The facility also keeps thousands of monkeys for use in experiments.

New Iberia was the target of an undercover investigation by the Humane Society of the United States in 2008. The nine-month investigation revealed numerous violations of the Animal Welfare Act, including inadequate veterinary care, unsanitary and overcrowded conditions, mothers and infants prematurely separated from each other, and many more. After viewing hidden camera footage taken inside New Iberia, Jane Goodall stated, “In no lab I have visited have I seen so many chimpanzees exhibit such intense fear.” View the disturbing video here.

New Iberia was in the news again earlier this year after the decomposing bodies of three monkeys were found trapped in a metal chute connecting outdoor cages. In September 2012, the National Institutes of Health announced that it would cease funding New Iberia and remove 110 NIH-owned chimpanzees from the facility. The respected scientific journal Nature has described New Iberia as a “troubled facility.”

With all the animal suffering and misery that Rowell witnessed during his time at New Iberia, he should feel right at home at Primate Products.

Smash HLS looks forward to giving Dr. Rowell a big Florida welcome. Until then, you can send greetings to his new email address: thomasjrowell@primateproducts.com

  1. The day we treat animals with the same laws as we treat humans, we will deserve the title of humans. Until then…we are the beasts…
